Whenuwishuponastar Final on tap at Mohawk

Campbellville, ON — With only three starts under her belt, freshman pacing filly Beachy Girl has yet to taste defeat. But although the daughter of Real Desire–Color Me Beachy is the favorite going into Thursday night’s C$54,200 Whenuwishuponastar Final for 2-year-old pacing fillies at Mohawk, it’s not going to be a walk in the park. The Beachy babe faces the winner of the second series elimination, B M MCW, as well as her stablemate Boo Hanover (both trained by Jim Wellwood) and five other feisty lasses.

“Everything’s gone good with her,” says trainer Joe Seekman of his young protege, who won the first leg of the Whenuwishuponastar series on July 19 by 2-1/2 lengths in a time of 1:56.4. “She’s actually a little ahead of where we expected her to be.”

Nonetheless, her racing style is still developing.

“I think she could do it from the back, but so far she likes to get up close and go from there,” he says. “She’s very game — she gets a real look of determination on her face as she comes up the stretch.”

Seekman, who owns a piece of the filly along with Hal Hewitt of Versailles, Kentucky, says Beachy Girl’s absence in the second leg of the series was the right choice for the youngster at this stage in her career.

“We didn’t want to over-race her,” he explains.

Still, her first appearance at Mohawk impressed the bettors enough to make her even money on the morning line for the series final.

“I don’t know if that’s good or bad,” says Seekman. “Sometimes it’s better to surprise everyone.”

Fortunately, with 2-year-old fillies there are always plenty of surprises. Catch the action in the Whenuwishuponastar Final at Mohawk on Thursday night, August 2. Post time is 7:20 p.m. and the final, race two, goes postward at 7:40 p.m.
