World champion Scarlet Brocade, 20, dies

by Joan Gannon

Easton, MD — It is with great sadness I report the passing of Scarlet Brocade. She was 20 years old.

The daughter of Big Towner-Meadow Scarlet held two track records, one of which was a world record (1:49.2 at Colonial Downs in 2005, the fastest mile by a pacing mare on a greater than mile track). Ironically enough, both tracks are now defunct (Rockingham Park and Colonial Downs).

Scarlet Brocade was a family project and trained by my two teenage boys under the watchful eyes of their grandfather, Franklin Gannon Sr. She did not hit the peak of her career until age 8.

Once we retired her, we decided to make sure she led a happy life. She became an incredible mom to six offspring. We own all six!

Our family will certainly miss her.
