OCRA hosts its 86th awards banquet

Urbana, OH — The Champaign County Fairgrounds once again was the site of the annual Ohio Colt Racing Association‘s dinner and awards fete on Sunday (Nov. 17) and a fine turnout was on hand to enjoy themselves.

Master of Ceremonies Mike Woebkenberg started the festivities. Thom Pye photo.

After the officers of “the new and improved” OCRA, President Dr. Bob Schwartz, Vice President Dennis Fricke, Secretary Judith Foureman, and Treasurer Lisa Schwartz held the 16-strong Fair member business meeting it was time for a social hour. Then Master of Ceremonies Mike Woebkenberg started the festivities as the recently-appointed OHHA Brand Ambassador Roger Huston presented the welcome message to the crowd.

It was a great home-style dinner prepared by The Farmers Daughter of Urbana that had everyone complimenting the meal and then Woebkenberg introduced double-award winner Western’s Last Gun and his owner/trainer Kent Wilcox to start the ceremonies.

Each divisional winner received a fine engraved piece with their own horse pictured that was created by Ann and Ray Lufkin.

The Signature Series, a late closing event that competes at all four stake circuits held at 21 fairs across Ohio, saw top winners in Matt Rowe’s pacer Dirty Steve and Rocking Meadows’ best trotter Rockinthepines being presented checks by Signature Series President Randy Haines.

The Dr. H.D. Schoonover Award, for those who love and support our business especially at the Fair level, went to Kate Meddles, the past WOCRA secretary/treasurer/teacher/mentor for a job well done.

There was an auction, a raffle, and a 50-50 drawing, all benefiting the OCRA that the crowd generously supported.

The night sailed along and was concluded on time as Special Appreciation Award winners Mike and Becky Woebkenberg grinned and noted “we all have to work in the morning.”

A truly fine and enjoyable evening.
