Trainers Birney and Callahan capture Rosecroft Opens

Ft. Washington, MD — Over the past three weeks, trainers Howard Birney and Brian Callahan have been sending out winners at a pretty consistent clip. Wednesday night (Nov. 4), both maintained their hot status as Callahan took the $12,500 Mares Pacing Open while Birney took the $12,000 Open Trot.

The drama in the Mares Pacing Open was action packed from the get go. Hillbilly Jet, who won last week’s event for Callahan, left from post nine but didn’t clear to the lead until well past a :26.3 opening quarter. Jonathan Roberts launched an attack first over with Winter Games and became the sacrificial lamb for the closers as Hillbilly Jet held her off past a :55.4 half, but by the time they hit three-quarters in 1:24.3, Psychic Blue Chip (Jason Thompson) was already three-wide and eventual winner Mittany Nicole was four-wide for Luke Hanners and the writing was on the wall.

The 5-year-old daughter of Mach Three rolled home off the banked turn and blew up the toteboard at 37-1. It was her fifth win of the year and third in her last six starts. Get Real Rusty closed for second, while Psychic Blue Chip was third.

It was the second win of the night for Callahan as his latest purchase out of Ohio, Miss Tressa, made it 2-2 on the local circuit by winning in 1:54.4. Leaving from post eight, she cleared past the opening quarter and drew off by 5-3/4 lengths to win with Eddie Davis Jr. in the bike. The 3-year old daughter of Big Bad John has won three in a row overall.

Timmy Offutt and Puddin N Pie won the Open Trot for the second time in the last three starts as the 6-year-old son of Yankee Glide stopped the timer in 1:55.2.

Puddin N Pie left from post eight and sat fourth until just before the half when Offutt pulled first over. As the field went past the five-eighths pole, Offutt couldn’t even get to the leader Luckycompeter (Roger Plante Jr.). Offutt rocked in the bike and started to urge Puddin N Pie who finally responded when K J Charlie (John Wagner) drew up alongside. The two gobbled up the leader and raced as a team to the wire with Puddin N Pie ($17.20) winning in the final strides. K J Charlie was second but placed third for pacing the final 20 yards to the wire. Believe In Him (Sean Bier) was elevated to complete a $133.80 exacta.

Hanners had a double as he won with John Wagner’s Tartfufo Lindy ($6.80) for trainer Arlene Cameron. Eddie Davis Jr. doubled by scoring in the opener with Just Faye ($3.20) for Ashley Bowers and trainer Brandon Tomlinson. Roger Plante Jr. picked up two wins as Gaareat Gaazoo ($5.20) won for Kerry Welty and Rear View ($17.00) won for Corey Braden and trainer Colby Hubble. Sean Bier won twice, guiding All In To Win ($15.40) to the winner’s circle for Kenneth Tisa and Tanzanite Love ($16.80) for Jason Walters.
