U.S. District Court Judge James Hendrix ruled on Thursday that the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, which was amended by Congress and signed into law in December 2022, is constitutional according to a story in Thoroughbred Daily News.
Ohio Sires Stakes action to begin Saturday
The final day of racing at Miami Valley Raceway will mark the opening of the 2023 Ohio Sires Stakes action. Two divisions each of the 3-year-old filly trot, filly pace, colt trot, and colt pace will highlight the action as the curtain falls on the Miami Valley meet Saturday (May 6). Each division will carry a purse of $55,000.
Massachusetts Sire Stake yearling nominations due May 15
Breeders and owners of Massachusetts Sire Stake eligible yearlings should note that nominations for foals of 2022 from a resident mare registered with the Standardbred Owners of Massachusetts, Inc. are due by Monday (May 15).
Bella Bellini set for 2023 debut
Bella Bellini, who in 2022 became only the second 4-year-old mare in history to be voted Trotter of the Year, will kick off her 5-year-old season Saturday (May 6) at The Meadowlands in the first round of the Miss Versatility Series.

Tioga Downs off to a big start this weekend
Tioga Downs kicks off the 2023 live racing season on Saturday (May 6). The races will begin at 5:15 p.m., a special post time to accommodate the simulcast of the Kentucky Derby. Races one-four will go before the Derby (estimated post time of 7 p.m.) with races five-12 resuming at approximately 7:25 p.m.
First qualifiers held at Scioto Downs
The first qualifiers at Eldorado Scioto Downs were held in conjunction with Press Night on Thursday (May 4). Thirteen races went to post with stallion Racing Hill, at 10-years-old, taking the fastest qualifier, winning in 1:53 with a :27.3 last quarter.
Espresso gets nod as Dexter favorite
Julie Miller is hoping to enjoy a strong Espresso on Saturday (May 6) at Freehold Raceway. Espresso, a two-time Grand Circuit winner and Kentucky Commonwealth Series champion last year, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s $137,775 Dexter Cup for 3-year-old male trotters at Freehold’s half-mile oval. The Hambletonian-eligible gelding, who is making his seasonal debut, will start from post two with Andy Miller in the sulky.
Records tumble in Paul Revere Pace at Plainridge
Nancy Takter trainee Caviart Scotland etched his name in the Plainridge Park record books with a 1:50.3 win in the second division of Thursday’s (May 4) $100,000 Paul Revere Pace, breaking the stakes record as well as the track standard for 3-year-old pacing colts.
