Battle for bragging rights at Humboldt (Iowa)

Humboldt, IA — On Sunday (July 3), 3-year-old trotters and pacers competed in multiple divisions of the Glenn and Lorraine Jenson Memorial Trot and the Mark and Ethel Insko Memorial Pace at Humboldt, Iowa, with fillies taking the top prizes.

Secretive Kate (Jason Telfer) was looking for her second win of the season when she took to the track in the fourth division of the Jenson. Leaving from the rail, Secretive Kate quickly grabbed the lead and didn’t look back through fractions of :31.1, 1:03.4 and 1:35.4. Secretive Kate was still up by over a length turning for home as she eyed the finish line. Trotting her last quarter in :30, Secretive Kate captured the win, trotting the fastest division in 2:05.4 for owners John Saner and Jason Telfer.

Race eight featured the fourth division of the Insko. Lil Char (James Gould) left smartly from the three-hole to go straight to the top in :30. Letting Windy Island (Elvin Zimmerman) take over, Lil Char sat in the pocket until past the half. Lil Char pulled to the outside and gained ground to recapture the lead as they turned for home before opening a five-length lead approaching the wire and stopping the timer in 2:00. Lil Char’s owners, Stephanie, James and Justin Gould, were awarded a blanket for the fastest pacing division.

Royal Roland picked up a driving triple, winning with Hangman McGee, DP Cantabs Girl and Fox River Luke. Brandon Jenson grabbed a driving and training double, with T A Woody Azzzz and Flying Calchips.

On Monday (July 4), 2-year-olds competed for bragging rights in divisions of the Orville Anderson Memorial Trot and Larry Frakes Memorial Pace, with the winners of the fastest divisions taking home the prize.

Will Roland teamed up with trainer Curtis Carey to see if they could keep Chicken N Dice’s winning streak alive in the first Frakes division. As the gate folded, Chicken N Dice left from post three to take command. After cutting fractions of :29, :59.2 and 1:31.3, Chicken N Dice was all alone at the top of the stretch. Chicken N Dice took a new lifetime mark of 2:02.1 and scored the fastest division to secure the title for owners Thomas Carey and Jesse De Long.

Roland and Carey teamed up again with She Pirate in sixth division of the Anderson. With a brush from the four-hole, She Pirate brushed from the four-hole to take the lead. After controlling the first quarter in :33, the half in 1:05 and three-quarters in 1:37, She Pirate still held the lead by two lengths. Using a :29.4 last quarter, She Pirate commandeered the fastest division in 2:06.4 and the blanket for owner Rian Sherman.

Roland went on to pick up a driving triple in race 13, with the Carey-trained Waterloo Lucy.
