Albert Buongiorne, 94, dies

Columbus, OH — Albert D. “Al” Buongiorne, age 94, passed away Dec. 29, 2022.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1928, in Holley, N.Y. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Brockport State Teachers College (now SUNY Brockport) and obtained his master’s degree from Syracuse University. Al was an honorably-discharged veteran of the U.S. Army.

After his teaching career, he embarked on a 31-year career in the licensing department of the United Stated Trotting Association, where he retired in 1993. His career took him to harness racing tracks throughout the nation.

Mr. Buongiorne married life’s love, Nancy, in September 1992, and they made their home in suburban Columbus, Ohio. Al was known for his entertaining sense of humor, vivid memory and talent for storytelling, and for being a voracious reader with a fondness for historical works. He also loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; stepsons, Andrew and Anton Kaufmann (Liz); stepdaughters, Cindy Kaufmann and Linda (Kaufmann) Stitt; and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lucille Buongiorne; brother, Robert; and sisters, Lenore Knapp and Sandra.

Graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Jan. 4, 2023, at Kingwood Memorial Park in the Chapel of Light, 8230 Columbus Pike (U.S. Route 23), Lewis Center, OH 43035.
