East Rutherford, NJ — The rain and thunderclouds held up on Saturday (July 8) night and there were plenty of exciting races on the card, including both Meadowlands Amateur Driving Club events.
In the first race, it was Its Showtime (Juan Cano), who set the pace though a modest :28 first quarter. There were a few horses who tried to leave but never made it to the top and this scenario set it up for horses coming from mid pack. As the field entered the stretch, it was a two horse duel that found the 3-year-old, T Dog (Michael Kimelman) victorious over Jumping Jake (Anthony Verruso). A hard closing Always B Billy (John Calabrese) got up to complete the trifecta. The mile was timed in 1:52.3. The 3-year old gelding is trained by Kimelman himself and owned by the Kimelman family consisting of Olivia, Sara, Michael, and Oscar, all residing in NY.
In the fourth race, it was a sprint to the lead and Joe Lee wasn’t letting anyone get by Seeuinnashville A, as he went a blistering :26.1 first quarter. The half wasn’t slowed down too much, as he went in :54. That left several horses floundering on the outside but would also get the pocket sitter and horses from mid pack involved. It was actually the longshot, I’m Burlington for Cameron Capone, who never did see the wood and grinded first over to clear and holding off all late challengers, to win by just over a length. The mile went a sizzling 1:51.2, one of the fastest miles on record in the US for an amateur pace event. Another longshot filled out the exacta, with William Clark Jr. guiding Gotta Minute N to a second-place finish, while Joe Lee hung on for third, with a broken hobble hanger!! The 8-year-old gelding is owned by Paul Kautz out of NJ and is also trained by Capone himself.
The MADC will be back next week with the first post on Friday night scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
