Capone sets record in MADC pace

East Rutherford, NJ — With just one week until the Hambletonian and end of the summer meet at the Meadowlands, one Meadowlands Amateur Driving Club race was carded for Saturday night (July 29), and the race didn’t disappoint. Records were meant to be broken, and another one that was recently set fell in the first race Saturday night.

When the gate sprung in the first race, Claytons Bettor N and James Slendorn went for the lead and didn’t have any challengers until the half-mile marker, when I’m Burlington N and trainer-driver Cameron Capone set sail for the lead and a mid-race move to the top. Once he got there, he continued to open up on the field and didn’t slow up. He ended up winning by just over six lengths, which was impressive enough. But the final time, an eye-popping 1:50.3, set a new speed record for an amateur driver by a fifth of a second, besting the old mark of 1:50.4 set only a few months ago by Nicole DiCostanzo. Brazen Brazilian (Michael Kimelman) skimmed the cones to finish second over Skyway Billy (Joe Lee), who rounded out the trifecta.

I’m Burlington N, an 8-year-old gelding, is owned by Paul Kautz.

The MADC will be back to close out their summer stand on Friday night (Aug. 4).
