Nancy Bar goes gate-to-wire to win Pocono feature Monday

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Mare Nancy Bar led every step of the way to win the Monday afternoon (July 31) featured trot at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania. The race was a conditioned event for non-winners of $9,800 in the last four starts and carried a purse of $12,500.

Nancy Bar, a 5-year-old mare trained by Tom Haughton, left from the outside post at odds of 6-1. Long odds are nothing new to her, as she won two starts ago at Pocono at 15-1 and followed that up by finishing second at 9-1 the following week.

On Monday, driver Braxten Boyd hustled her aggressively to the front end. By the time they reached the final turn, only Lucky Weekend was close enough to threaten, but he could only manage a second, three-quarters of a length back, with Woodside Emileah finishing well back in third. Nancy Bar trotted the mile in a career-best 1:53.2.

With the victory, Nancy Bar now has three wins in 12 starts this year. It was her 11th career victory and pushed her lifetime earnings to $93,977 with the winner’s share of the purse.

Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania resumes live racing on Tuesday (Aug. 1) with a first post time of 1 p.m. (EDT). There are 14 races on the Pocono Tuesday program.
