Mybffannee brings $435,000 to top third session of Lexington Selected Sale

Lexington, KY — Trotting filly Mybffannee topped Wednesday’s buys at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, going for $435,000 to Nancy Takter as agent, to set the event’s record for the highest price ever during a third session. She is a full sister to undefeated 2-year-old colt Karl, who is trained by Takter.

Later in the afternoon at the Fasig-Tipton Pavilion, trotting filly Lisbon, whose second dam is Dan Patch Award-winner and Hall of Fame broodmare Solveig, the mom of 2013 Trotter of the Year Shake It Cerry, sold for $375,000 to Determination.

Both of the top-two sellers were daughters of stallion Tactical Landing. Prior to Wednesday, the highest price for a yearling in any third session was $335,000 for Southwind Bugz, later named Mission Hill, in 2017.

All totaled, Wednesday’s 247 horses sold for $13.02 million and average of $52,717. Those numbers bettered last year’s records for a third session, which were $11.99 million in gross for 235 horses and $51,038 average.

Through three days, this year’s sale is at a total of $58.48 million for 607 horses, an average of $96,351. Last year’s record-setting sale was at $55.49 million for 584 horses, and average of $95,024.

Mybffannee, out of the mare Avalicious, was bred and consigned by Crawford Farms. Her brother Karl is 5-for-5 this season, with his wins including the Kentucky Sire Stakes Championship Series final and a division of the Bluegrass Stakes. His 1:51.2 score in the Bluegrass last week at Lexington’s Red Mile made him the second-fastest 2-year-old male trotter in history.

Takter said Mybffannee would be owned by Anderson Farms, Robbie Pryde, Robert LeBlanc, Bender Sweden, and Crawford Farms. Mybffannee was the seventh-highest priced yearling purchased overall at the Lexington sale.

“She’s a beautiful individual, just as nice as her brother,” Takter said. “Being Karl’s sister there is a lot of residual value with her. I guess it kind of speaks to how confident we are in Karl’s ability. Hopefully, he stays healthy and sound; I think he’s a really, really nice horse. But I don’t want to short-change her and make it sound like she is just Karl’s sister. She’s a super individual herself.

“I think they’re both a little bit more refined, athletic-looking, Tactical Landings. They have kind of similar lines to them, the way they’re built.”

She added, with a laugh, “Hopefully, she is like her brother and wants to go really fast, too. That would be great.”

Takter has enjoyed success with both of the Tactical Landing-sired horses already in her barn. In addition to Karl, she trains Tactical Approach, this year’s Hambletonian champ.

So far at the Lexington sale, Takter has purchased 13 yearlings.

“I think it’s a very strong sale,” Takter said. “There were a lot of nice individuals that I missed out on, that I would have liked to train, but I’m trying to stay away from going too crazy and filling my barn up with (high-priced) yearlings. I try to be a businesswoman when it comes down to it.

“It was hard to tell the bid-spotter once in a while ‘no’ because I really wanted the horses, but trying to be fiscally responsible for my owners is my No. 1 priority and my No. 1 job. So, that was a little frustrating. But I think we ended up with individuals that will do very well on the racetrack and can hopefully be some fun for their owners and make a little bit of a profit for them.”

Mybffannee is New Jersey and Kentucky eligible.

Lisbon, out of the mare Swing It Cathy, was bred by Steve Stewart, Oakwood Farms, and Ernst Gerbaulet. She was consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency. In addition to Solveig and Shake It Cerry, her family includes three other horses with more than $500,000 in lifetime purses (counting international): Uncle Lasse, Solvato, and Dontyouforgetit.

She is New Jersey and Kentucky eligible.

Rounding out the top-five sellers Wednesday were trotting filly Omega (Cantab Hall-Exceed Expectation) for $200,000 to Barbato Breeding LLC, trotting colt Yannick G Kemp (Walner-Southwind Adele) for $180,000 to Melvin Hartman, and trotting colt Channing (Propulsion-Stella Jane) for $170,000 to Howard Taylor.

Through three days, trotting sires Chapter Seven and Walner led the sale in gross, with Chapter Seven at $7.49 million for 55 horses and Walner at $6.19 million for 48 horses. Next were pacing sires Tall Dark Stranger, at $5.52 million for 59 horses, and Captaintreacherous at $5.48 million for 47 horses.

Leading in average (among horses with more than two sales) was trotting sire Gimpanzee, at $168,238 for 21 horses. Captaintreacherous topped pacing sires, at $116,702.

The fourth session of the five-day sale begins at 1 p.m. Thursday.
