Berlin, MD — Lyons Stealth unleashed a first-over attack and powered to a 7-1 upset in Sunday’s (May 26) $12,000 Open 1 Handicap Pace at Ocean Downs, the first of the track’s 2024 meet.

Lyons Stealth strode powerfully to the end of a 1:53.2 win in Sunday’s Open 1 Handicap Pace. K. Moyer Photography.

William Carter comfortably settled the 4-year-old Sweet Lou gelding in third as stablemate Volley Ball Beach (Cole Olsen) clicked off a :27.1 first quarter. With nine-sixteenths to go, Lyons Stealth angled first-over and advanced to engage the pacesetter after a rated :57.2 half. The pair dueled past three-quarters in 1:25.3, and Lyons Stealth asserted to claim the lead midway around the final turn before steadily drawing away to a three length win in a seasonal best 1:53.2. Starship (Jonathan Roberts) emerged out of a failing pocket to save second; He’s Gonna Getya (Trae Porter) finished a ground-saving third.

Lyons Stealth, an eight-time winner whom Cole Olsen owns and who paid $16.80 to win, has now won two of his last three starts since being transferred to the Darren Olsen stable. It was one of two wins on the program for trainer Olsen; Clyde Oglesby Jr. also recorded a training double.

Drivers Trae Porter and Johnathan Ahle both bagged hat tricks on the 12-race program.

Racing at Ocean Downs resumes Wednesday (May 29); the first of 14 races is due off at 7:05 p.m. For more information, visit oceandowns.com.
