Columbus, OH — Refined continued her winning ways at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Friday (August 23) winning the $27,000 Open Trot in 1:52.1.
The 8-year-old Uncle Peter mare now has five wins and five seconds in 15 seasonal starts, nine of which were at Scioto. Having only been off the board twice at the south Columbus oval this year, she has secured a spot at the top of her class.
Friday’s win was a near gate-to-wire victory from post six with regular pilot Dan Noble in the bike. Three-wide through much of the first turn, Refined was still parked but in front by the :27.2 opening quarter. The pair continued to lead the field towards fractions of :56.4 and 1:24.4. Oh Look Magic (Eric Goodell) sat in the pocket to finish second, with Adamsville Road (Kayne Kauffman) third.
Refined is trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr. for owners Joyce McClelland and Larry Wills. With 128 starts under her belt, Refined has now earned $1.119-million.
Goodell came back to win the $26,000 filly and mare open pace two races later with My Red Sea in 1:50.1. Leaving from post five, My Red Sea took to second as the field went towards the :26.4 opening quarter with Alexa Skye (Noble) leading the way. Pulling mid-way through the turn, My Red Sea settled on top well before the :56.1 half and continued to lead with a strong hold of her driver towards the 1:23.4 third-quarter. This time it was Noble with Alexa Skye who finished second while Trevor Smith got Racing For Three up for third.
My Red Sea is trained by Jason Irwin for Jennifer Bongiorno Stable and Robert Weinstein. The 4-year-old mare by Downbytheseaside has nine wins in 19 seasonal starts and $247,911 in lifetime earnings.
The 90-day 2024 Eldorado Scioto Downs race meet is winding down and runs through Saturday, September 14. Races are held Tuesday-Saturday with a first post of 5:45 p.m. each day, except for Friday, September 13 which will have a 6:15 p.m. post to help accommodate horsemen attending the Ohio Selected Yearling Sale.
