Woodstock, VA — Frank Chick’s dazzling 2-year-old filly Caviart Daisy continued an impressive freshman campaign Sunday (Oct. 19) with a dominating nine-length win in a $8,000 Virginia Breeders’ elimination pace at Shenandoah Downs.
The daughter of Sweet Lou, fresh off a wire-to-wire performance one week ago in the first round of eliminations, was a nose behind front-stepping Caviart Amore Mio at the quarter in :28.2 — before powering forward. Driver Tony Morgan, competing in Woodstock for the third time ever, led Caviart Daisy to additional panels of :57.1 and 1:26.4 before crossing in 1:55.3, nine-plus lengths in front of Caviart Farms’ runner-up Caviart Amore Mio. Dan Chansky’s Watch Sparks Fly finished third.

Julie Collins’ Caviart Santa Fe took the second fillies division, wiring the field in 1:59.1. The daughter of Tall Dark Stranger finished second to Caviart Daisy a week ago but dodged her on Sunday. Driver Eric Davis led the Alex Goldin trainee to initial quarter times of :29.2, 1:00.1 and 1:30.3 before hitting the wire 2-3/4 lengths the best. Chuck Perry’s Luna Speaks was second and Dan Chansky’s Watchoutforda IRS finished third.
Ramona Gillespie’s Caviart Trenton had the best time from a pair of colt and gelding pace eliminations in completing a wire-to-wire effort in 1:56.2. The Captain Crunch gelding had a similar effort last week in a first-round triumph where he won by 13 lengths in 1:57. Reinsman, Tim Deaton, was in the sulky for both victories and prevailed Sunday by 5-3/4 lengths for trainer, Janet Davis. Tony Alagna and Caviart Farms’ Caviart Cadet was second and Scott Woogen’s Michelle’s Kyle finished third.
Alagna’s other colt, Hungry Joe, rebounded from a third last week to reach the winners circle Sunday with a two-length victory in 1:57 3/5. Driver Anibal Borjas was in the bike for the Stay Hungry colt who picked up his first lifetime win. Dr. Edward Ward’s Caviart Sheridan, a first-round victor, was the runner-up while Alagna’s Caviart Tucker finished third with Billy Carter aboard.
The $320,000 Virginia Breeder’s Championship Day card is this coming Saturday (Oct. 25) when pacing and trotting finals for both sexes will be contested. Winning colt trotters from Saturday’s eliminations were K R Breeding LLC & Robert Rudolph’s Caviart War Room (2:02.3) and Bob McKim’s Kalispel (2:01.2) while filly winners included Thestable Cherrys Girl & Hutchinson Harness LLC’s Cherry’s Girl (2:02) and Stuart Chambers Racing, Bcjm, Inc. & Divine Horse Racing’s Wolfpack One (2:01.1).
