Bangor, ME — McGwire Sowers held the hot hand on a chilly Saturday (October 25) at Bangor Raceway, steering four winners down Victory Lane, including two from his wife, Autym Sowers’, well-conditioned roster.
Miss Quality (1:59.2-$3.40) provided the Sowers’ with their first taste of victory as the veteran mare persevered through an early jockeying battle, grabbing the lead just past the quarter-pole, before extending out to a 1-1/4 length margin at the wire. The win was the 13th of the season for the nine-year-old daughter of Quality Western.
She’s A Sassy Beach (1:59.3-$6.60) later threw in a near-duplicate effort to her stablemate’s, boldly forging a front-end journey, bravely battling a first-over challenge from GA Speed Matrix (Aaron Hall), and then doggedly refusing to be headed at the wire. The win marked the 30th career top-tally for the seven-year-old daughter of Sunshine Beach.
Sowers again out-dueled Hall on Saturday when Mister Fantasy (2:00-$2.80) withstood a near crushing first-over assault from Bolt Ruler, battling back through the stretch to stride supreme by a neck, the identical margin which had separated Sowers and Hall with She’s A Sassy Beach and GA Speed Matrix.
Motto (2:01-$3.40) also joined the Sowers grand slam surge on Saturday, mounting a deep rally from far back as the early forwardly placed foes picked on each other to the three-quarter pole, enabling the Mark Harris trainee to vault to a 2-1/4 length margin at the wire.
McGwire Sowers’ four driving wins solidified his position in fourth place on the Bangor Raceway leaderboard while Autym Sowers’ two training wins moved her into a second-place tie with Valerie Grondin with 22 top-tallies each; just four wins removed from current leading conditioner, Benson Merrill.
Live harness racing at Bangor Raceway will be featured on a three day per week schedule in October with 3:00 pm (EDT) post times for the Wednesday twilight cards and with 12:10 pm starting times for the Saturday and Sunday matinees. Closing day of the 2025 Bangor meet will be on November 1st.
