Sigourney, IA – Caroll Dean “C.D.” Huffman, 81, died on Nov. 9, 2025 at his home.
He was born July 28, 1944 in Ottumwa to Delbert “Frog” Huffman and Helen Mae Miller. C.D. married Carol Ann Holzhauser on Dec. 26, 1960.
Growing up in Batavia and Packwood, C.D. started working for the pipeline and railroad at a young age. He worked for Don Haupert and Glenn Arnold, working at the Fairfield and Ollie Sale Barns. C.D. and Carol lived in Packwood before moving to Eldon in 1964 where he raised dairy cows and hogs as well as sold insurance. As the top insurance salesman, he won trips to the Kentucky Derby 2 years in a row. In 1975 he purchased the Keoco Auction Co. in Sigourney. Moving to Sigourney in 1983, He also owned the Knoxville Sales Barn for 7 years and the Carthage, IL Sales Barn for several years. In 2015 he sold the Keoco sales barn, but continued to help as he was passionate about the business.
C.D. was always into racehorses. Along with his family he owned Huffman Racing Stables. He raced horses throughout the country, even in New Jersey and New York and was inducted into the Iowa Horsemen’s Association Hall of Fame.
In his later years, he loved watching online horse races, cattle market and RFD. Throughout his life, C.D. was known for having a heart for helping others.
He was a member of Sigourney United Methodist Church, Ottumwa Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114., B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347 and various harness associations throughout the country.
Surviving is his wife, Carol Ann “Dolly”; a son, Rick Huffman of Sigourney, 2 daughters, Brenda (Dennis) Lovetinsky of West Branch, and Beverly (Jeff) Shipley of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren, Amanda (Mitch) Sieren, Shelby (Tevin) Mendenhall, Kacie (Josh) Wood and Klint (Addy) McDowell; 8 great-grandchildren, Kayveonna, Javyn, Braxdyn, Kazdyn, Collyns, Colsyn, Campbell and Landree; a sister, Karen Sue (Ronnie) Myers of Florence, AZ and sister-in-law, Betty Jane Breitwieser of Sigourney. He is also survived by Chad Svendsen who lived with C.D. and Carol for a time and Joe Follman, a loyal family friend;
He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Helen Mae Pettit; grandfather, Charles Miller; daughter-in-law, Terri Huffman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lowell and Catherine Holzhauser; and brother-in-law, Jim Breitwieser.
Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 12th at Reece Funeral Home with his family present to greet friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, November 13th at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial will be in Deuser Cemetery.
