Columbus, OH – The United States Trotting Association is pleased to announce the launch of the USTA Racing Officials Network, a new initiative designed to support individuals interested in pursuing careers as harness racing officials.
The Racing Officials Network connects aspiring judges, race secretaries, charters, clerks, starters, and other racing officials with experienced industry professionals who have volunteered to serve as mentors. Through the program, participants can access practical guidance, career advice, and firsthand insight into the responsibilities and challenges of officiating and race office administration.
While educational programs, licensing schools, and examinations provide an important foundation, becoming a successful racing official requires more than an understanding of rules and procedures. The judgment, professionalism, communication skills, and practical decision-making required in these roles are often developed through experience and mentorship.
“The racing industry benefits when experienced officials are willing to share their knowledge with those interested in following in their footsteps,” said Michele Kopiec, USTA Corporate Secretary and Racetrack Operations & Licensing Manager. “The Racing Officials Network provides an opportunity for aspiring officials to learn from seasoned professionals and gain a better understanding of what these careers entail.”
“Some of the most valuable lessons I learned as an official did not come from a rulebook or classroom,” said Mickey Peterson, Acting State Steward for the New Jersey Racing Commission and volunteer mentor in the program. “They came from experienced professionals who took the time to answer questions, explain their decision-making process, and share their experiences. This network creates those opportunities for the next generation of officials.”
The USTA maintains a directory of volunteer mentors representing a variety of officiating roles and experience levels. Individuals interested in learning more about careers in racing officiating may review the mentor directory and contact mentors directly based on their interests and career goals.
Participation in the Racing Officials Network is voluntary for both mentors and mentees, allowing individuals to establish mentoring relationships that best fit their interests and availability.
The USTA encourages anyone interested in becoming a racing official, expanding their knowledge of officiating, or exploring opportunities within the harness racing industry to take advantage of this valuable resource – the network is open not only to Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP) graduates, but to anyone interested in pursuing a career as a racing official.
