Hughesville, PA – The second stop of the season of the Pennsylvania Fair Circuit was held on Wednesday (July 8) and Thursday (July 9) at the Lycoming County Fair in this northcentral Pennsylvania borough, and this week the 3-year-olds had better luck – in contrast to their abbreviated racing at Butler, they got their entire slate of racing in.
The tone of the Hughesville meet for speed was “follow the filly,” as the ladies posted the fastest time in their races for age and sex, vs. the males’ fastest clockings, in three of the four “matchups.” Both freshman sections followed this rule on Wednesday, devoted to 2-year-olds, topped by the Stay Hungry-Thats What I Said pacing distaff Thats Faith, who won in 2:02. Steve Schoeffel, who had a big meet at Hughesville, is the trainer-driver for the partnership of Kathy and Brett Schoeffel, Roger Romesser, and Marian Schilling.
On the trot, the International Moni-Graceful Style filly Gem Hanover took speed honors with a 2:06 mile for her co-owners, driver Wayne Long and trainer Joyce Lineweaver; in fact, all three baby filly trotters (in both “A” and “B”) went faster than any of the four sections for males.
The 2-year-old boys salvaged some pride when the only horse to record two “A” victories in the 2026 Fair Sire Stakes racing to date, the Stay Hungry-Latte Lady gelding Lucas Hanover, delivered a 2:03 win for driver Cody Schadel and father-trainer Todd Schadel; Christine Schadel, mother and wife, co-owns the winner with Todd.
On the sophomore program Thursday, another offspring of Stay Hungry, the pacing filly Bling Hanover, posted the fastest clocking of the young PA fair season with a 1:59 victory. A 1:53.2 winner earlier this season at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows, Bling Hanover was driven by Eric Neal for trainer Mitchell York, co-owner with his wife Erin York, and all involved will be able to accumulate some serious “bling” if the filly holds this form.
The other male horse to land speed honors for his age and gait was another horse who had won in quick time earlier at The Meadows (1:56), the Greenshoe gelding Tymal Kryptonite. If valid crossover-gait comparisons can be made, Tymal Kryptonite’s 2:00.1 final trotting time may have been the most impressive race of the Hughesville meet, with Steve Schoeffel the successful driver-trainer for the owners, Steve’s wife Kathy and Lewis Falton.
Wayne Long drove five winners at the meet, one more than Steve Schoeffel; Todd Schadel harnessed five members of his barn for victories, just a win ahead of both Joyce Lineweaver and Steve Schoeffel.
Little rest with the season started: the next stop is a “Two-Day Event” at the Dayton Fair, with 2-year-olds on Saturday (July 11) at noon and Sunday (July 12) for 3-year-olds starting at the same time (note that this post time information may be different that appeared in some places earlier). These cards have already been drawn.
