Anderson, IN — Sitting next to last as the $22,000 Filly & Mare Open Pace made its way for home, Can’touchthese uncorked a wicked late rally in the center of the track to storm to victory on Saturday (July 18) at Harrah’s Hoosier Park with regular pilot John De Long aboard for trainer Roger Welch.
Leaving from post eight in the field of nine, De Long took back to eighth as Naked On A Hill (Jordan Ross) blitzed to the point through a :26 opening quarter. Angel Hill (Trace Tetrick), the 8-5 favorite, was parked and pressing on the first turn before crossing over in front of Naked On A Hill on the backstretch en route to a blistering first half in :53.3. Brooklets Rockette (Kevin Lambright) was the first to move from fourth on the far turn, moving first-over while Can’ttouchthese was still 10-1/2 lengths back from fourth-over when Angel Hill tripped three-quarters in 1:21.3 on the smoker.
Angel Hill began to come under fire at the head of the lane, with Brooklets Rockette applying pressure before Can’ttouchthese tipped wide for the drive in the center of the track. The big daughter of JK Endofanera began to wind up her rally, thundering home in :25.4 widest of all to pick off all foes in the lane before surging to the wire 1-3/4 lengths clear in 1:49.2 with her :25.4 late rally. Tarshish (Marcus Miller) rallied between rivals to eek out the second position from the pace-setting Angel Hill.
Can’ttouchthese has won three of seven now in her four-year-old campaign and matched her career best with the winning time. The homebred for William De Long, Patrick De Long and Douglas Riccolo has won 20 of 36 lifetime, banking $597,256 in her career.
Live racing returns to Harrah’s Hoosier Park on Tuesday (July 21) with a 14-race program set to get underway at 5:30 p.m. Two-year-olds will be the primary focus on Tuesday, with nine of 14 on the card for freshman that also includes $10,000 guarantees in the Late Pick 4 (races 11-14) and Late High 5 (race 14) done in partnership with the USTA’s Strategic Wagering program.
