Plainville, MA — Plainridge Park hosted an outstanding card of racing on Tuesday (Sept. 1), and the inclement weather that was present throughout failed to dissuade the racing participants from putting forth some very impressive performances.
Driver Brett Beckwith and trainer Enrico Robinson both put up outstanding numbers during the afternoon, with Beckwith winning five races and Robinson winning four.
Beckwith won with Stayoutofmylane (1:55.3, $5.20), Blue Bobby Sox (1:55, $5.80), SS Superstar (1:51.4, $6), Lochlan Hanover (1:51, $7.20) and It’s In The Stars (1:51.1, $2.80).
Lochlan Hanover and It’s In The Stars provided Robinson two of his training wins, with Blood Moon A (1:51.4, $7.60) and T H Tyson (1:49.3, $15) completing his grand slam.
There were two top class pacing events on the program plus a pair for the younger set, and all four winners of those races took new lifetime marks.
In the $25,000 Open Handicap for fillies and mares, Royally Hot continued her stellar season with her sixth win of the year.
Royally Hot (Mike Oosting) got away seventh as a host of horses left, resulting in Sweet Hayley Jane A (Ron Cushing) parking Soft Shot (Beckwith), who was battling for the lead through quarters of :26.1 and :54 through the rain and over the sloppy track. As the race moved onto the backstretch, an active outer flow developed with Royally Hot fourth-over.
Sweet Hayley Jane A was getting the edge on Soft Shot as they passed three-quarters in 1:21.4 while Royally Hot swung three-deep and was pacing up a storm. Royally Hot took the lead from Sweet Hayley Jane A in the turn, cleared at the top of the stretch, and simply paced away to win by 3 lengths in a new lifetime mark of 1:50.
Royally Hot ($4.40) is owned by Tim Tetrick and trained by Alison Hynes.
Then, in the $25,000 Open Handicap for male pacers, T H Tyson tripped out early and finished strong late to win impressively.
T H Tyson (Bruce Ranger) tucked in second behind Jackson Cooper (Nick Graffam), who sped through quarters of :25.4 and :55, before Montana GB (Mitchell Cushing) pulled first-over on the attack.
Montana GB worked next to T H Tyson at three-quarters but was unable to reach the leader, and then started to fade in the turn. That’s where T H Tyson made his move, tipping off cover as the race neared the stretch. When they straightened for home, T H Tyson just kept pacing and opened up a 2-3/4-length gap at the line, where he won in a career best 1:49.3.
T H Tyson is owned by Pollack Racing and trained by Enrico Robinson.
Plainridge also held two $15,000 Romper Room races for Massachusetts-bred 2-year-old pacers who are eligible to the $3.2 million (est.) Massachusetts Breeders Stakes, which begins Sept. 28.
The first was won by Atreides (Drew Monti), who sat second behind Chase News Network (Beckwith) from the half to the top of the stretch, where he tipped off cover and closed to win by a length in a new lifetime best 1:54.3.
Atreides (Stay Hungry-Lady Killer), who is owned by Scott McKenzie and Stratton Stable, returned $6.80 for the win. Cory Stratton trains the winner, whom McKenzie bred.
The second one was won by Stayoutofmylane (Beckwith), who went to the front and led at every station before turning for home and winning by 6-1/4 lengths in a lifetime mark of 1:55.3.
Stayoutofmylane (Stay Hungry-Gold Orchid), who is owned and bred by George Ducharme Stable, Jim Winslow and Dr. M. Moschgat, paid $5.20 for a $2 wager.
