Windsor, ME – Driver Kevin Switzer Jr. rose to the forefront of an extremely competitive card on Sunday (Sept. 6), scoring three winners over the course of the 12-race program while cementing his status atop the leaderboard as the 2026 edition of the Windsor Fair barreled into its final weekend of action.
While Switzer’s day began with disappointment after getting nosed out for the win when Real Horrorshow fell by a mere nose to Daytoremember (driven by Heath Campbell) in a $17,434 non-wagering split of Maine Sire Stakes competition, his prospects gradually turned as the action headed deeper into the meat of the well-crafted betting card.
Switzer notched his first victory with a zippy gate-to-wire score when Go Dancing A (1:57.4, $4.20) waltzed to his second consecutive win for owner/trainer Zach Vickerson, vaulting to the early lead while refusing to be headed, surviving the dogged tracking and extreme late kick of Prophet Blue Chip (James Doucette), who just missed at the wire despite the valiant attempt.
Trotters proved non-troubling for Switzer on Sunday as Little Macabee (2:01, $4) thrived through an extended first-over grind, rallying from fifth to first in the course of the final half, while notching his 49th career victory for trainer Eric Bickmore and owner Maryann Tompkins.
But perhaps Switzer’s most imposing score came with Massive Speed (1:53.4, $6), when the 4-year-old Maine-bred pacer scorched the oval to record the second fastest time of the meeting at this year’s edition of the Windsor Fair.
After jockeying for position throughout the entire first quarter, Massive Speed resigned himself to a pocket journey behind the pacesetting, Vel Trust In Time (McGwire Sowers). Riding the inside draft behind incredibly accelerating fractions, Massive Speed trumped his rival in the final stanza, throwing in an astounding :27.3 last quarter to earn the 1-3/4-length margin at the wire.
Trained by Benson Merrill for owner Leighton Property, the son of Dude’s The Man won for the fourth time from his last five starts while falling just two-fifths of a second off the Windsor Fair track record for 4-year-old geldings.
Massive Speed will next appear in Wednesday’s (Sept. 9) initial leg of Bangor Raceway’s Fred Nichols Memorial Pacing Series, which will feature twin $8,000 elimination legs on Sept. 9 and 16, culminating in a $20,000 final to be carded during Maine Sire Stakes finals day on Oct. 17.
Harness racing will conclude for the season at the Windsor Fair on Monday (Sept. 7) with post time set for 1 p.m. (EDT). Monday’s card will be headlined by the $10,000 renewal of the Windsor Fair Open Trot.
