Meyersdale, PA – Racing at the Somerset County Fair 2-Day Sire Stakes event for Sunday (Sept. 20), which was to feature 3-year-olds, has been cancelled due to steady overnight rain in the locale of this southwest Pennsylvania borough.
The fairgrounds track maintenance people and several horsemen had worked very hard to get the surface into racing shape the previous day, when 2-year-olds raced, and track came up very fine after an hour’s delay for work and produced top-quality racing (a full report on the Meyersdale Saturday card will be distributed later in the day). But constant overnight precipitation could not be controlled by anyone, and so the card was abandoned.
This is the sixth card to be totally, or mostly, lost to adverse conditions on the nineteen-venue Pennsylvania Fair Circuit this year, four of the cancellations involving the sophomores. As Meyersdale is the next-to-last card on the circuit this year, the pointstandings to make the $200,000 Pennsylvania Fair Sire Stakes Championships, on October 9 at The Meadows, will be impacted by the lost racing opportunity.
The 2- and 3-year-olds will have one more stop at which to race this Friday (Sept. 25) and Saturday (Sept. 26) at Bloomsburg, former Grand Circuit track, with freshmen on Friday and sophomores on Saturday, both cards starting at 11 a.m. These cards will be drawn Wednesday.
