A champion’s record
Maryland, 2, 1:51.4; 3, Q1:51.2 ($1,719,655), was voted the 2024 Dan Patch and O’Brien Two-Year-OldTrotting Colt of the Year. His freshman campaign earned $1,227,695 — the highest total of any racehorse inNorth America that season and the second-highest single-season earnings ever for a two-year-old trotter.
At two he won four Group 1 races:
Mohawk Million
Peter Haughton Memorial
William Wellwood Memorial
Breeders Crown
Along the way he set track records at both The Meadowlands and Woodbine Mohawk Park. He returned atthree to take a 1:49.2 BT. This is equivalent to a kilometre-rate record of 1:08.0. He retired with six wins and15 top-three finishes from 18 starts.
Trained by Marcus Melander and raced by Courant Inc. & partners, Maryland was a $475,000 yearling andstands 16 hands (163 cm).
Pedigree
Maryland is by Chapter Seven out of Crucial (Father Patrick–Jolene Jolene), herself a World Champion attwo with a record of 1:52.4f and earnings of $528,598. His pedigree crosses well with Muscle Hill, TacticalLanding, Muscle Mass, Donato Hanover, Cantab Hall, Andover Hall and other leading broodmare sires.
An exceptionally valuable family
Few stallions can match the commercial value of Maryland‘s family. This week his full sister CoffeeshopHanover (Chapter Seven–Crucial) sold for $800,000 at the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg.
She follows two Walner siblings, who are three-quarter siblings to Maryland because Walner is a son ofChapter Seven. Cambridge Hanover sold for $1,000,000 at Harrisburg in 2024. Climatic Hanover toppedthe opening session at Harrisburg in 2025 at $725,000 and has since become a Grade 2 stakes winner witha record of 1:52.2. Maryland himself was a $475,000 yearling. Crucial’s four yearlings to date have sold for acombined $3,000,000.
The strength runs a generation deeper, through Maryland‘s second dam Jolene Jolene, the foundation ofone of the leading trotting families in the breed today. Her daughter Epoch, also by Chapter Seven, toppedthe opening session of the 2022 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale at $725,000. Her yearlings Ineffable (by Cantab Hall) and Voguish (by Gimpanzee) sold for $600,000 and $535,000, and her daughter Venerable was a Dan Patch and O’Brien Award winner.
In all, seven yearlings from Maryland‘s immediate family have sold for $4,860,000, an average of almost $700,000 each. It is a pedigree that very few stallions anywhere in the world can offer.
A strong first season
In his debut season at stud in 2026, Maryland was supported by many of the industry’s leading trotting
mares. He bred 134 mares, 114 of them confirmed in foal — an excellent fertility rate of 85%. His first foals
arrive in 2027.
