from Vernon Downs

Vernon, NY — Vernon Downs is getting ready to throw Central New York’s biggest Kentucky Derby party and everyone is invited to join in the southern style fun on Saturday (May 7). Weekend events continue with a special Sunday afternoon of racing May 8 in honor of all moms.

Starting that Saturday, guests can spend the day at Vernon Downs watching the famous Kentucky Derby race, simulcast from Churchill Downs. Those wishing to enter the Derby Hat contest must register at 3 p.m. for a chance to win the $500 prize. Everyone 18 and older who attends can enter to win one of two $500 Derby Dream Bets to wager on any one horse.

Live harness racing follows that evening with a special post time of 5:10 p.m.

Derby Day is one of the biggest racing events of the year and Vernon Downs continues to grow as the premier destination to watch the big race year after year with fun and activities for all ages.

While the Kentucky Derby itself doesn’t begin until 6:34 p.m., guests can watch and wager on all the action throughout the day beginning at 10:30 a.m. The signature southern mint julep will be served throughout the festivities.

Then on Sunday, all moms will be honored with a rose while supplies last and a chance to enter the Diamond Dig sponsored by A Buyer of Gold and Silver Coins and Jewelry. Twenty women will be selected to dig through the sand to uncover one of 20 gemstones buried in a sandbox, including the grand prize diamond.

Afternoon racing begins at 1:25 p.m. and a special Mother’s Day brunch runs from 12-3 p.m. For reservations, call 315.829.6817.
