Tioga Downs
Brookroad Knight and Corey Braden captured Saturday night’s $16,000 open handicap trot at Tioga Downs. Leaving from post position two in a field scratched down to eight, Braden got away fifth as Aruba Vacation (Fern Paquet Jr.) led the field to the quarter in 27.3. Brookroad Knight got underway second-over behind the favorite In Your Room (Mike Simons) as the field went by the half mile mark in :57. Down the backside Paquet put Aruba Vacation in gear to try and step away from the field through a third panel in 27.4, reaching three-quarters in 1:24.4. Around the final turn Aruba Vacation could not put away the challengers and Braden swung Brookroad Knight three high off of cover and swooped the field to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:54.3. The mile was a new seasonal best for the 4-year old son of Cr Excalibur–Questionable Lady who is owned by John O’Connor and is trained by Bruce Borden. Aruba Vacation (Fern Paquet Jr.) was able to hang tough and finish second, while In Your Room (Mike Simons) finished third.

Running Aces
As is often the case at Running Aces, nine different trainers triumphed on Saturday night’s nine race program. With 13 of 53 live race nights completed, no trainer has amassed more than eight winner’s circle visits thus far in 2013, but an astounding 32 trainers have produced multiple winners from their stables already this season. Defending training (and driving) champion Nick Roland joined Tim Brown as the first to reach eight stable wins when his own Squawky Vegas upset a field of Minnesota-sired sophomore colts and geldings chasing a $7250 purse. The 3-year-old son of Hot Pans picked an opportune time to break his maiden, at 14-1 odds, by collaring odds-on favorite Reds Place in deep stretch in 1:56.1. In a tandem $7250 state-restricted race for pacing fillies, Razzle Be Dazzled notched her third straight victory in the division in 1:55.4, besting stablemate Place At The Beach. For trainer Dave Flinn, it was his seventh seasonal score, to tie Don Sherman in the conditioner standings. Others with six victories are Luke Plano, Joel McDanel, Steve Wiseman, Jason Ryan and Jim Ellison. On the driver’s side, Luke Plano with 21 leads a six-pack of talented drivers who have notched ten or more wins in the first 13 nights. The others are Nick Roland, John DeLong, Rick Magee, Steve Wiseman and Jason Ryan.

Saratoga Casino and Raceway
Arthur and Cliff Drummond both made their local debut on Saturday in the $20,000 Open Pace at Saratoga Casino and Raceway. Arthur (Modern Art) got a second-over journey in his first Spa start and out-legged his rivals in the stretch before stopping the timer in 1:53.1 in the feature. Canadian invader Cliff Drummond (Billy Dobson) got the perfect pocket trip and moved into the passing lane in the stretch before coming up second best. Veteran Money Twitch A (Stephane Bouchard) hit the board for the seventh consecutive start, earning the show spot in the Open Pace. Arthur, who was piloted by Harry Landy for trainer Lou Pena, returned $11.20 to win.

Pompano Park
Millionaire pacer Hyperion Hanover, the ‘senior citizen’ in Pompano Park’s winners over feature pace on Saturday night, cruised to a handy three length win for Andy Santeramo. The 10-year-old son of Camluck, trained by Jim McDonald for the S S G Stables of North Boston, NY, took the lead from his outside post five, repelled two challenges during the journey, and pulled away in the lane using a :28.1 closer to stop the timer in 1:53.2. Avantage, with Tom Sells in the bike, finished second while the only mare in the field, Bombilla Hanover, driven by Bruce Ranger, finished third in the quintet. After the event, Santeramo said, “I was fortunate that we were able to make the top easily and rate that opening quarter. This horse is a ‘gamester’ and is very handy. A horse doesn’t win a million dollars any easy way but this was one of his easier wins during his career, I am sure.” Hyperion Hanover has won 45 times during his lifetime and his bankroll now stands at $1,134,741 to go along with a 1:49.1 mark achieved four years ago. As the overwhelming favorite at 1/2 on the tote, Hyperion Hanover paid $3.00 to win.
