Buffalo announces policy regarding Equine Herpes outbreak in Canada

from the Harness Horse Breeders of New York State

Latham, NY — The Harness Horse Breeders of New York State are pleased to announce current information on Buffalo Raceway’s policy to allow horses shipped from Canada to participate in New York Sire Stakes events, with proper safeguards in place.

We applaud their efforts to protect the health and well being of our horse population and their support of the New York breeding program.

This important memo from James Mango is an update on Buffalo Raceway’s policy regarding the Equine Herpes outbreak in Canada. Please read it carefully.

Until further notice, beginning Friday (May 31), a horse that is being shipped in from Canada, or has been previously shipped in from Canada that is in any way considered “questionable” because of its recent participation in Canada or past residence in Canada may participate in the races at Buffalo Raceway under the following conditions:

For the New York Sire Stakes on Saturday, June 1:

The trainer of the horse must provide Buffalo Raceway with a nasal swab PCR for herpes certificate before entering the stable area and the horse will be required to have a temperature check at the track vet’s office before entering the ship-in barn.

For overnight races:

A horse that has been shipped in from Canada, or has been previously shipped in from Canada that is in any way considered “questionable” because of its recent participation or past residence in Canada must provide Buffalo Raceway with a nasal swab PCR for herpes certificate before it can be entered in a race.

No horse currently stabled at the Campbellville farm in Ontario will be allowed to participate until further notice.

We ask you for full cooperation on this matter.

Thank you, kindly.
