Columbus, OH — The Maine Senate approved a bill on Thursday (June 9) that would allow racinos in Biddeford and Washington County, while narrowly rejecting one that would allow a casino in Lewiston.
According to a stoy in the Kennebec Journal, L.D. 1203, which would allow operations with harness tracks and slot machines in Biddeford and Calais, was approved by a 21-12 vote. The bill faces more House and Senate votes before it is sent to Governor Paul LePage, who is expected to veto the bill. LePage has said he wants voters to decide whether to expand gambling in the state.
The other citizen initiative that was debated Thursday, L.D. 985, would allow a casino to open in Lewiston. After a short debate, the Senate voted 17-16 against the proposal.
