Coleman finishes 1-2 in Gold elim

Campbellville, ON — Fan Hanover Stakes winner Western Silk scored a victory in Thursday’s single OSS Gold elimination for 3-year-old pacing fillies getting the measure of stablemate Bay Girl in a time of 1:51. Trained by Casie Coleman, the pair of fillies will headline the last C$130,000 Gold Final for the division next Friday at Woodbine Racetrack.

On The Cusp (Steve Byron) was quickest off the gate from post five clearing to the lead but allowed Bay Girl (Phil Hudon) to cross over and take command before the opening panel in :27.1.

Western Silk scored a victory over stablemate Bay Girl in a time of 1:51.

As the fillies marched towards the half, Putnam Mackenzie was called upon by driver Mario Baillargeon and struck the lead as the fillies went by the half in :55.2. Post time favorite, Western Silk (Mark MacDonald) was positioned fifth about sixth lengths off the lead.

Around the final turn, Western Silk had to commit first-over as Putnam Mackenzie flashed third quarter speed of 1:22.3. When the fillies turned for home, Bay Girl moved to the outside from the pocket to challenge Putnam Mackenzie with Western Silk two lengths off the lead.

With a sixteenth of a mile to go, all three fillies were strides apart but it was Western Silk getting the best of her rivals to win by a length and returning $2.60. Putnam Mackenzie finished third with Preppy Party Girl back in fourth.

Western Silk, a daughter of Western Terror, increased her career earnings to $1,205,916 for the owner partnership of Coleman and Tom Hill.

The filly is the leader of her division in the provincial program and has drawn post 5 for next week’s final. The entire field is listed below:
