Freehold, NJ — Spam Spade ($3.60, $2.10, $2.40) was too slick for Wind Surfer and drew off to a 1-1/2 length victory in the $85,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings, the featured fourth race on Friday, September 5, at Freehold Raceway.
The gelded son of Dream Vacation-Chynatown, driven by Andy Miller, had the lead at every call and trotted the mile in 1:56.1, two-fifths of a second shy of the stakes and track record time of 1:55.4 that Spam Spade established on August 15.
Wind Surfer ($2.10, $2.10) held on for second and survived an inquiry. Ringside Muscle ($2.80) was third best, finishing 4-1/4 lengths back. Both are gelded sons of Muscles Yankee.
Spam Spade is trained by Julie Miller for the Andy Miller Stable Inc. and has banked $83,730 lifetime, finishing in-the-money in eight of 17 starts, including four wins in nine attempts in 2008.
Bred by Perretti Farms, Spam Spade was a $22,000 Harrisburg Sale purchase.
In the co-featured $10,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes-Green Acres event for 3-year-old pacing fillies, Ideal Morning (Western Ideal-Break Of Day) coasted to a six length victory in 1:55.1. Jeff Gregory was at the lines of the Peter Kleinhans owned and trained filly.
