Each year the Grand Circuit presents the Delvin Miller Awards to the leading driver, trainer, and owner on the historic circuit. The winners are presented bronze medallions with a brown and gold ribbon (symbolic of the driving colors of Delvin Miller, the longtime President and supporter of the Grand Circuit).
In 2003, David Miller broke John Campbell’s stranglehold as the Grand Circuit’s leading driver. Campbell had taken the award in 13 of the previous 14 campaigns. Miller recorded 29 driving points (10 for a first place standing in wins, 10 for being the leader in money, and nine for second place in UDR).
Miller finished as the 2003 champion in the Grand Circuit dash standings with 46 wins, 21 more than Dave Palone and Ron Pierce’s total of 25. Miller was also the leader in earnings with $3,788,205, while Pierce was second at $3,007,737. Ray Schnittker won the UDR title with a mark of .448, with Miller second at .438.
Trond Smedshammer, the Grand Circuit’s leading trainer for the 2003 season, will receive his Delvin Miller Award this coming Saturday (October 2) at The Red Mile.
Bob Glazer of the Peter Pan Stables earned the third Delvin Miller Award of his career as the Circuit’s leading owner in 2003.
