Sacramento, CA — Cal-Expo posted a huge upset in the Cal-Bred Open pace on Friday night as Wastin Time, the longest shot on the board ($26.40), romped home by three and three-quarter lengths in 1:551. The event carried a purse of $8,000.
Close Up, Robitaille, Du Wah Diddy, and Hi Ho Silverwheels left strongly and Close Up grabbed the pylons early. Robitaille slacked off and eased to the pylons behind Close Up. Rocky Stidham then had to go for it with Du Wah Diddy as they were parked. They finally found the pylons past the opening quarter.
Now Rick Plano found his charge, odds-on favorite Hi Ho Silverwheels parked and he had to sprint to the top. On the far turn Bruce Clarke tipped Robitaille out first over and Tim Maier followed that move with Iwannawinbetts.
Wastin Time was now dead last. Instead of coming around the bend third over, Lou Pena elected to go three wide and Wastin Time made a huge move to gain the top past the three-quarters and confidently traversed the stretch all by himself for the win. Iwannawinbetts came around Robitaille and passed both Du Wah Diddy and Hi Ho Silverwheels for second. Hi Ho Silverwheels hung on for third.
David Siegel, Greg Robinson, and Bob Thronson own the winner and Pena also trains him. This was his sixth win in 24 starts this year and he has now earned just shy of $26,250 in those starts, which were all in California.
