California horsemen hold annual meeting

Sacramento, CA — The California Harness Horsemen’s Association had its annual meeting Saturday (April 23), along with the California Sires Stakes committee.

Executive director Jim Perez opened the meeting. Chris Schick from Watch and Wager also spoke about the meet at Cal-Expo. The meet saw an increase of 8 percent in purses. Also, Watch and Wager has also signed a contract with the California Fair association for another seven years, as well as a contract with Arizona Downs (formerly Yavapai Downs), in Prescott, Ariz.

Donna Newman, executive director of the California Harness Sires Stakes committee, then presented awards to the divisional champions for 2021:

• It’s Pointless, 4-year-old pacing horse, owned by Mark Anderson
• Prom Queen, 4-year-old pacing mare, owned by Robin Clements
• Nick Roland, leading Sires Stakes driver
• Gordie Graham, leading Sires Stakes trainer
• Kents On Nukes, leading breeding stallion

Perez then presented the California Horse of the Year award to the trotter Pridecrest, owned by Chris Schick and trained by Kathie Plested Wiseman.
