Columbus, OH — Freshman pacing colt Captaintreacherous, who was three for three during the month of August, including a stakes record performance in the Woodrow Wilson, has been named Horse of the Month by the United States Trotting Association.

Captaintreacherous, a son of Somebeachsomewhere-Worldly Treasure, is owned by Brittany Farms, Marvin Katz, Joe Sbrocco and White Birch Farm. He sold for $250,000 at the Lexington Selected Sale. His mother is a full sister to pacing mare Worldly Beauty, who was a two-time Dan Patch Award winner and earned nearly $2 million lifetime. Captaintreacherous has won five of six races in his career for trainer Tony Alagna and driver Tim Tetrick. The youngster has now banked $747,078.

Captaintreacherous was a 10-1/4 length 1:49.3 winner in the Woodrow Wilson for 2-year-old male pacers.

In his first start of the month, Captaintreacherous took the lead on the backstretch and never looked back, winning the $309,050 Woodrow Wilson for 2-year-old male pacers by 10-1/4 lengths in 1:49.3 at the Meadowlands Racetrack. The time was a stakes and track record.

In his next start, the heavily favored Captaintreacherous held off an upset-minded Vegas Vacation to capture a $109,206 Nassagaweya division on August 18 at Mohawk. Unleashing a :26.3 final frame, Captaintreacherous got under the wire in 1:51.3.

Remaining at Mohawk, Captaintreacherous next took to the track in a $40,400 Metro elimination and equaled his lifetime-best with a 1:49.3 performance. Into the backside, Tetrick powered the 1-9 favorite to the front where he remained the tempo-setter, putting up fractions of :54.3 and 1:23.1 en route to a three length triumph.

Captaintreacherous has already gotten off to a good start in September, as he overhauled Apprentice Hanover in deep stretch, then held off a closing Odds On Equuleus by a neck to win the $1.01 million Metro Pace final this past Saturday at Mohawk. Captaintreacherous finally seized the front near the wire, only to have driver John Campbell and Odds On Equuleus come breathing down their necks in a stakes record-equaling 1:49.2, a mark also held by 2009 winner Sportswriter.

“From day one, I really liked him,” said Tetrick after the Metro final. “Whether he had the (1):49 speed that he showed, I didn’t know that. But I knew he had a lot of talent. And he’s gotten better and better and learned how to rate. He lets me drive him the way I want to and that makes him a lot easier to put in the right spot.”

“When we were training him down he always acted like he had a little bit extra,” trainer Tony Alagna said before the Metro. “Every time you asked him for a little more speed, he’d find another gear. His strong suit has always been his temperament. He has great manners. He just (relaxes) completely and then when they come at him he’s ready to go again.”
