Maryann Sarama-Luce to be honored by USHWA
Maryann Sarama-Luce was a pioneer in harness racing in western New York as one of only a handful of female drivers who raced full time at Batavia Downs. And despite beating the odds more than just in a race, she not only met the challenges she faced in her role, she exceeded them and excelled in the sport for decades.
USA leads Italy after first round of amateur competition at Pompano
The USA-Italian amateur competition took center stage at Pompano Park on Sunday night (Dec. 8) with the USA team edging out the Italians in the first of their two night, four race series. The 53-40 edge came as Gary Barbere, driving his own Andriy Fortna, and Dein Spriggs, handling his new addition High Blue, won their respective events.
2019 Harness Heroes trading cards available for holidays
The Harness Horse Youth Foundation’s 2019 set of Harness Heroes trading cards is now available for holiday gift-giving. The front of each card features a photograph, while the back includes statistics and biographical information; both sides are laminated.
Last call for media awards entries
The best of harness racing journalism in 2019 will be honored by the U.S. Harness Writers Association with the John Hervey Awards for writing, Sam McKee Award for broadcasting, and George Smallsreed Awards for photography. The deadline for entries is extended 24 hours, to 5 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 10).
Hall of Famer Nick Saponara, 80, dies
Nicholas J. Saponara, a member of the Harness Racing Communicators Hall of Fame, and a past president of the U.S. Harness Writers Association (USHWA), an organization to which he belonged for 57 years, passed away on Saturday (Dec. 7) after health issues.

The Super Hi-5 jackpot at The Meadows has crashed through the $80,000 barrier.
Thanks to another carryover, Monday’s (Dec. 9) Super Hi-5 jackpot stands at $81,095.21.
Babinga Wood becomes repeat winner in Saratoga series
Saturday evening’s (Dec. 7) card at Saratoga Casino Hotel consisted of three divisions of the second leg of the Holiday Pacing Series. Participants had their final chance to accrue points towards next Saturday’s (Dec. 14) Series final.
Delia du Pommereux defeats Bold Eagle in Prix du Bourbonnais
The second test for the Prix d’Amerique, the Prix du Bourbonnais, was contested at Vincennes on Sunday (Dec. 8) and was won by the 6-year old mare Delia du Pommereux. Franck Nivard was in the bike and the pair just caught long-leading Bold Eagle with Eric Raffin to win by a neck.
Geez Joe wins at Big M
Geez Joe was in tough in his last two races and did not fare well, but the veteran returned to his winning ways Saturday night (Dec. 7) at one of his favorite tracks, taking the $30,000 Preferred for pacers at The Meadowlands.
