Belina Josselyn wins Prix de Paris
The French Queen of Trotting, 8-year old Belina Josselyn, was favored to win the Prix de Paris at Vincennes Sunday (Feb. 24) afternoon. The marathon race is contested over the odd distance of 4,150 meters or 2-5/16 miles.
Roberts wins four at Rosecroft
Forgive Joe Offut, the owner and trainer of Rosecroft speedster Hickory Aloha, if he and the family have been distracted lately. Offut’s granddaughter, Paisley, just underwent serious surgery in a Maryland hospital, and while she shows positive signs in recovery, Hickory Aloha ($11.20) brought a smile for the Offut family with a win in Sunday’s (Feb. 24) $9,000 winners over pace, in 1:54.2.
McWicked is 2018 Horse of the Year
McWicked on Sunday became the oldest pacer in history to be named Horse of the Year, receiving harness racing’s top honor to cap the U.S. Harness Writers Association’s Dan Patch Award banquet at Rosen Shingle Creek. The 7-year-old stallion bested pacing mare Shartin N, 86-27, to claim the trophy. Atlanta, who was named Trotter of the Year, finished third with eight votes.
Burning Blaze is 2018 Minnesota Horse of the Year
The Minnesota Harness Racing annual meeting and awards banquet was held on Saturday (Feb. 23) at Vanelli’s by the Lake in Forest Lake, Minn. Among the top honorees in the awards portion of the evening were Burning Blaze and Goody Two Socks. Trainers Nick Roland and Justin Anfinson each had three divisional champions, while breeders Cheryl and Al Sandbulte and Glen Sauder each had two divisional champions to their credit in 2018.
Top Miami Valley trots to Pine Dream and Primed N Powerful
Pine Dream evened the recent score with All About Cowboys in the Sunday (Feb. 24) $24,000 Open I Handicap Trot at Miami Valley Raceway. Over the last five weeks, the two top trotters have dominated the local squaregaiters, each winning a pair and each with two runner-up finishes. Both have earned just over $40,000 during the initial two months of the season.
Double feature on Sunday at Saratoga
Sunday’s matinee at Saratoga Casino Hotel consisted of a double feature. With Saturday night racing not beginning until next week, the regular Saturday feature joined Sunday’s (Feb. 24) Open Trot as highlights of the afternoon card.
