Freehold, NJ — The horse Red Rouge was identified in a recent USTA website story as being the 80th horse helped by the USTA’s SOS program. That horse is, in fact, retired in southwestern Pennsylvania and not being cared for by the New Hampshire SPCA, as had been reported.
The New Hampshire horse’s tattoo and identity were reported to the USTA as having been read and verified by three SPCA officials, including a veterinarian. In fact, it appears that the correct horse is another Standardbred gelding whose markings, age and tattoo were nearly identical to Red Rouge’s. One digit of the tattoo was apparently mistaken for an eight and it appears to actually be a three.
All involved in the identification of this horse and reporting of the story regret the error and wish the real Red Rouge a continuing happy retirement.
