Day of remembrance planned for Sunday’s races in Circleville

by Tami Hartman

Circleville, OH — The second day of the Pickaway County Fair’s harness racing meet (Sunday, June 19) will be honoring several horsemen and supporters of local racing who have passed away in the last year.

Representatives of the families of owner/trainer Doug Parker, veterinarian and horse owner John “Doc” Haughn, owner/racing official John Fissell, Fair Board member Bob Collins, and owner Dr. Robert McCoy will be present for a short ceremony to open the races. Several of these individuals also have feature races named in their honor that will be contested as part of the afternoon’s action.

Another important local harness racing supporter, T.D. Van Camp, will serve as the day’s honorary starter. Mr. Van Camp, who resides in Circleville, continues his family’s involvement in the sport. He has owned many fine racehorses over the years — most notably the world champion trotter Worldy Woman. In addition, he has lent strong support to the Pickaway County Fair, including the donation of funds to help build the fence surrounding the racetrack.

Post time is 12:45 p.m. Admission is free. To continue with the day’s theme of remembrance, race patrons will be presented with a small American flag, courtesy of the local VFW.
