Vernon, NY — Dewey Arnold (Ron Harp) captured the featured $8,500 Open Trot on Saturday (May 3) at Vernon Downs.

Dewey Arnold ($4.00) went straight to the front and led to the quarter in :28. He used a :29.4 second quarter to be first to the half in :57.4. Woodside Gabe (Leon Bailey) came first-up to challenge heading to the far turn. The two battled all around the final turn as Dewey Arnold led to three-quarters in 1:26.3.
As they reached the stretch Dewey Arnold scooted away to win easily in 1:55.1. Topville Swift Dan (Jimmy Whittemore) finished second. Woodside Gabe had to settle for third.
Dewey Arnold is a 7-year-old gelding by Deweycheatumnhowe. He is owned by Phillip Hale and trainer David Dewhurst. It was his third win of the season and he now has 38 career victories.
Leon Bailey drove five winners on the card. He was first with Always A Story, Isaac, Mississippi Rabbit, Excursion, and Two Star Magic.
