Lexington, KY — Dr. Katie Flynn, a veteran in the fight against the spread of equine infectious disease and biosecurity, was recognized by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) on Tuesday when she was announced as this year’s President’s Award honoree. The award was presented during the AAEP’s annual convention in Denver.

The AAEP tweet said Dr. Flynn was honored for “…her dedication to the association over the past year by contributing a significant portion of time and expertise to lead the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee.”

Dr. Flynn is the daughter of Massachusetts horseman Joe Flynn. While working toward a master’s degree at the University of Kentucky, she also worked as an intern at The Horseman And Fair World magazine. Following her graduation from veterinary school she served an internship at the University of California-Davis and she’s remained in California, where she is a state veterinarian.

There she has led efforts in that state and elsewhere to implement biosecurity procedures, contain disease and prevent outbreaks. She has lectured around the world on biosecurity in stable areas and particularly at equine events.

In her spare time Dr. Flynn catches harness races at Cal Expo and makes the occasional trip back home to visit her family and consult with her father about his horses, which this year included the Maine stakes winner Just Enuf Sass.
