Saturday’s (August 22) edition of Fair Roundup features results stories from the Lake County (OH) Fair and the Defiance County (OH) Fair.

Fillies contest Buckeye Sweepstakes at Lake County Fair

Painesville, OH — It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon at Robert C. Sidley Raceway in Painesville, Ohio, for the first of two days of harness racing. There were seven races on the card including four races of the Buckeye Sweepstakes for fillies.

Shez Good Osborne won her Buckeye Sweepstakes event in 2:01.3.

In the first race for 3-year-old pacing fillies, Amazing Towner (Towner’s Big Guy) went gate-to-wire in 2:04.2. Kurt Sugg was in the bike for trainer Marty Wollam. It was the filly’s seventh win of the season.

There were two $6,410 divisions of the Buckeye Sweepstakes for 2-year-old filly trotters. In the first division, Susie’s Return almost wired the field but the winner was Miss Ohio Spur (Pegasus Spur). The favorite trotted the mile in 2:06.4 for Russell Swartz. Mike Medors is the trainer for Robert Sidley.

In the second division, Ryan Stahl guided Anastasia Whinnie to the winner’s circle in 2:06.4, a new lifetime mark. The filly is owned and trained by Jeff Conger. The victory was her second of the season in five starts.

In the $9,320 Buckeye Sweepstakes for 3-year-old filly trotters, Parris Island wired the field from the two hole with Don McKirgan in the sulky. The veteran horseman guided her to a 2:04.4 mile. The favorite, Sam’s Honeybee, finished second.

In the $7,320 Buckeye Sweepstakes for 2-year-old filly pacers, Shez Good Osborne crushed the field in 2:01.3. Northfield Park regular Ryan Stahl guided the daughter of On The Attack to a 14 length victory. It was her third victory of the year. Eric Hamlet trains the filly for Jerome T. Osborne.

Sophomores in action at Defiance County Fair

Hicksville, OH — The Defiance County Fair at Hicksville, Ohio, opened its three-day race program with 11 races on Saturday.

Hustlin Hooray (Chip Chip Hooray-Hustlin Halfmoon) took the first division of the 3-year-old filly trot in 2:08.3. Natasha Brande is the owner-trainer of Hustlin Hooray with Mark Headworth picking up the winning catch-drive on Saturday.

G.B. Reddin’s Sassey Sauterelle (Ilooklikemymom-JH Sauterelle) captured the second split in 2:04.3. John Konesky III is the filly’s trainer-driver.

Mile For Money (Emile Angus-Sunrise Drive) was victorious in the lone division of the 3-year-old colt trot. Jerry Lighthill drove the gelding for owner Kim Berry and trainer Jim Mulinix. Mile For Money toured the Hicksville oval in 2:05.3.
