Fort Washington, MD – Stamphillshadow GB extended her win streak to five races — the last three for owner/trainer Steve Wetzel — with a sharp 1:51.4 score in Thursday’s (Dec. 18) $12,000 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace at Rosecroft Raceway.
With meet-leading driver Russell Foster at the lines, the 5-year-old Smack Talk-Serranohall mare sprinted clear of Miss Chantilly N (driven by Jonathan Roberts) to control a :26.1 first quarter, rated a :55.1 half, and then parried a stern first-over challenge from runner-up Go Now (William Carter) to win by 1-1/4 lengths. Cheesey Lady (Justin Vincent) lunged late from her second-over tow to narrowly miss second.
As the even-money favorite, 16-time winner Stamphillshadow GB paid $4 to win.
The mandatory payout of a $5,967.91 carryover in the Jackpot Hi-5, offered in race 10, prompted $44,102.37 in “new money” to be bet into the closing-night pool. The winning combination of 8-3-2-1-9 returned $1,063.10 on a 50-cent ticket.
Foster, Crites capture fall titles
Foster was a runaway winner in the drivers’ table, with his 74 wins over the 27-day fall meeting well clear of Roger Plante Jr. and Roberts, who tied for second with 42. William Carter (30) and Eric Davis (22) rounded out the top five.
On the training side of the ledger, Johnny Crites Jr. led all conditioners with 22 wins, over Katie Callahan (16), Bryson Dunning (13), Plante (12) and Howard Birney (11).
