By A Length earned $673,467 in his racing career.

Owned by David Hamm throughout his racing and breeding career, he won 44 career races and banked $673,467.

He competed in the 2000 Little Brown Jug final and many other stakes races throughout his career. He took his lifetime mark of 1:50.4 as a 4-year-old at the Meadowlands.

“He was a great horse to be around,” said Linda MacDonald, a Delaware trainer who has managed By A Length’s breeding duties at Merrie Medo Farm the past three years. “He had a lot of personality and attitude.”

By A Length raced until 2007 and had several different trainers in his career such as Chris Marino, George Teague, Jr., Norwood Truitt and Mike Stevenson. He held the Harrington 2-year-old track record for approximately eight years, which in the current era of speed and fast miles, is an enigma.

“I didn’t get him until later in his career, but I always liked him,” said Teague. “He had a lot of heart and was a fast horse that loved to race.”

By A Length was in his third season of breeding and his oldest foals are yearlings this year.
