Gary “Leo” Leonardi, 70, partner of Tarja Butcher, of Perth, N.Y., passed away suddenly Jan. 26, 2026.
Born June 15, 1955, in Albany, N.Y., Gary was the son of the late Frederick Leonardi and Jeanne Burhans Leonardi.
Gary dedicated his life to his family, including his beloved dog Finn. He was a proud father and grandfather.
Saratoga track announcer Mike Sardella graciously commented on Gary’s career:
“Gary was one of the top trainers at Saratoga Raceway for several seasons. After bursting on the scene and winning the track’s award for Up-and-Coming Trainer in 1982, Gary thrived at the Spa in the late 90s and after the turn of the century.
“In a historic 2002 campaign, Gary was not only the leading trainer at the track but broke the record for most wins by a trainer in a season. In a year in which his training average was an unheard of .577, his pacing mare Sister Gold won an incredible 25 races, the most of any horse in North America. Leonardi was known for his ability in the claiming game, thriving with claimers both on the pacing and trotting side of the sport.”
Gary is survived by Tarja, daughters Lorri (Anthony), Emily (Ashley), son Jimmy, daughter-in-law Bobbie Sue, grandchildren Maddie and James, and ex-wife and longtime friend, Pam.
He is also survived by his stepmother Eleanor, brothers Larry, Freddie, Billy (Nancy), and sisters Diane (Paul), Chris (Mario), and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gary Jr., late wife Melody, and sister Bonnie.
