George Owens Jr., 80, dies

Columbus, OH — George H. “Red” Owens, Jr., 80, of Hamilton, Ohio, died Feb. 18, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dayton.

He was born Oct. 22, 1929 in Hamilton, the son of the late George H. Owens, Sr. and Bertha (nee Philpot) Owens. Mr. Owens was a staff sergeant in the U. S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War. He married Ruth Garnett on November 10, 1950 and she preceded him in death in 1986.

Mr. Owens was a longtime Standardbred trainer.

He is survived by his children, Linda (Harry) Parrott, Randy, Dennis (Mel), Donnie (Kim), Steve (Kim), Deanna (Rob) Murrill, and Michelle (Drew) Donisi; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Dallas (Dottie); sister, Donna Gray; and brother-in-law, Gary Beiser. In addition to his wife, Mr. Owens was also preceded in death by his siblings, Pat Beiser, Wade, Reva (Delwin) Day, and Mittie (Oscar) Mullins.
