GSY Friday recap from Freehold and the Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ – The GSY had another “doubleheader” on Friday (Nov. 18) with one pace race at Freehold Raceway during the day and three races on the card at the Meadowlands at night. This week featured rather frigid conditions at both venues.

The 11th and final race on the Freehold card featured seven pacers going to post. With no leavers and everyone getting away in post position order, it was Steppin Hurry (Kubi Erzene) who took command and set modest fractions throughout the race. He looked like a winner turning for home but was nipped right before the wire by pocket-sitter, Firenglow A, (Lee Morris) who edged ahead up the cones to a nose victory in a mile timed in 1:59.3.

Magainze Theme (Anthony Verruso) got up for third in an evenly bet race with every horse was between 5/2 and 9-1. The 10 year-old gelding is owned by August Santore from NJ and is trained by John Wyatt.

As half of the drivers made their way up the Garden State Parkway and N.J. Turnpike for the night session at the Big M, they all made it there safely and on time for the first race that featured the GSY pacers.

The one theme in all three GSY races for the evening was speed. In a majority of the GSY races, speed usually does not hold up for victory, but Friday night it did in all three races.

In the first race, there was no question from start to finish who was the winner as Mach Time N (Newton “Yogi” Sheridan) went into Mach 3 mode from his outside eight post and never had an anxious moment. Dismissed at 27-1 odds, he destroyed this field winning by 5-1/4 lengths in a mile that went in 1:53.

Another longshot (7-1), Sunshine’s Finest (William Clark Jr.) finished second while Sheer Talent (David Glasser) rounded out a nice trifecta. This 10-year-old gelding is owned by Mr. James Guccione from NY and is trained by Yogi’s brother Melvin Sheridan.

The third race featured 10 pacers and again another outside solo leaver from post position nine, Moneyorroses (Tony Beltrami) left hard for the top spot and never relinquished it. His strides shortened in the stretch but he was still able to win by a diminishing length over a game mare, Know Your Roll (Lee Morris), who was parked every step of the way and still managed a nice second. Deerfield Beach (Anthony Verruso) rounded out the trifecta. The mile went in 1:54.3. The 4 year-old gelding is owned by Triple Q Stables LLC from NY and is trained by Edwin Quevedo.

The fifth and final GSY race of the night featured some early shuffling for position for the top spot, but after a brush to the lead just after the quarter, Trashtonguetalker (Robert Hechkoff) took command and never looked back, winning by three lengths in 1:54. The favorite and pocket-sitter, Rockabilly Charm (Tony Beltrami) ended up second while Doc Semalu (Tony Verruso) came from way back to round out the trifecta. Trashytonguetalker is a 10-year old gelding is owned by Hechkoff’s R.B.H. Ventures Inc. from NY and is trained by Juan Cano.

The GSY is scheduled to be in action again next Friday (Nov. 25) at Freehold and the Meadowlands.
