GSY Series in action Friday at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — With a big rainstorm that came through right before the Big M card, four GSY races took place on the Friday night (May 27).

The first race on the card featured only two leavers with the favorite parked on the outside, Bilbo Hanover (David Glasser) but he managed to grind his way to the top just before the half.

That early work proved costly to him as he was challenged by the early leader, Statesman N (Newton “Yogi” Sheridan) and those two battled all the way into the stretch but that set it up once again for the closers.

Another longshot winner ended up being Outwit Outrun(Mark Silva), who boldly moved three wide around the far turn and cruised to an easy 4-3/4 length victory over the sloppy going.  His final time was 1:53.3.

Bruce’s Magic (James Slendorn) skimmed the cones to get up for second by a nose over Glasser, who held on to third.  The 3-year old gelding is owned by All Star Racing out of NY and is trained by Silva.

The fifth race featured ten pacers going to post and again and it was Fourboltmane(Newton “Yogi” Sheridan) who got a relatively easy lead but went a little too fast to the quarter and half and when the field turned for home, he was out of gas.

This race was like the first, in the fact that another longshot and closer ended up winning.  With a perfectly timed move, Cote Keim was able to guide his pacer Bytheway Hanover to the lead and looked like an easy winner until Takeittotheface (David Yarock) came charging home after being parked the entire mile to lose by a head.

Causway (McKenzie Sowers) rounded out the trifecta.  The mile went the same time as the first GSY race, in 1:53.3.  The 4-year old filly is owned by Jamie Keim out of NJ and is trained by Cote himself.

The eighth race on the card featured 10 more GSY pacers and leaving hard from the eight post was Ferdinand A (James Slendorn).

After a :27.1 first quarter, he was able to back down the second quarter to a :58 half-mile rating and he looked to be a sure winner turning for home.  The outer flow stalled and only the pocket sitter had a shot to beat him.

As the field edged towards the wire, it was Casino Bags Anso (Jonathan Ahle) who was able to get up in time to win by a nose over Slendorn.  Dream Out Loud N (Tony Beltrami) rounded out the trifecta.  It was another race in the GSY in which the favorite didn’t even hit the board.  The mile was timed in 1:54.3.

The 9 year-old gelding is owned by Triple Q Stables LLC out of NJ and is trained by Edwin Quevedo.

The tenth race featured the last GSY race of the evening and with the track upgraded to good, there was only two horses that left hard for the lead.  Windsong Jack (Tony Beltrami) left hard from post five and was able to overtake Tuxedo Bay (Mark Silva) through a :26.4 first quarter.  He was able to get a half in :55.4 but that still ended up being too much as neither was in the top three at the finish.

That’s because closers and horses from all positions were coming in the stretch and when Peter Kleinhans aboard William Mcwhiskers saved all the ground, he was able to skim up the cones en route to an easy open lengths victory.

Longshot Tj Blast(Tony Verruso) ended up a nose ahead of Rockabilly Charm(Jonathan Ahle) in the place photo.  The mile went in a fast 1:52.  The 6-year old gelding is also owned by Kleinhans out of NJ and is trained by John McDermott.

It was another good showing at the pools and four GSY races on Friday night with only one favorite winning.  I think it was the first time a favorite has won in several weeks at the Meadowlands in these races.

The $27.60, $16.80, $14.20, and $7.40 were the four winning prices for every $2 win bet wagered.  The betting public likes the wide open board and they will be back in action next Friday at the Meadowlands.

There are other GSY races and clubs at various venues on the east coast including Ocean Downs next Sunday night.  The first post is scheduled for 6:20 p.m. at the Big M.
