Horse, King Alphonso win Pocono features

Wilkes-Barre, PA — The pacer Horse and the trotter King Alphonso won Tuesday afternoon’s (May 25) $15,300 twin features at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono — one in a tight fight and one in a romp.

Horse has done well for himself since moving east from his native Alberta, recording three wins and a second-place finish in seven starts. Tyler Buter rallied the Vertical Horizon gelding from just off fractions of :26.4, :55.2 and 1:22.3 to take the stretch lead, then kept him rolling to defeat the late inside thrust of Pocono Pike shooter Tru Lou by a head in a lifetime best 1:51. Bucky Angle conditions the talented pacer for William Daggett Jr. and Lawrence Vukovic.

King Alphonso’s route was more direct: go to the lead and increase the margin. The son of Muscle Hill did just that with fractions of :27.3, :57.1 and 1:24.3, and ended up 5-1/4 lengths clear at the end of a 1:53.3 mile while aided by two different pocket sitters breaking stride. Jim Pantaleano drove for trainer Christen Pantaleano and owner Matthew Morrison.

George Napolitano Jr. and Tyler Buter both won three races on the day.

Racing at Pocono resumes Saturday (May 29) at 12:30 p.m., with talented Open trotters gathering for a $22,500 contest and the Rainbow Pick-5 carryover standing at $73,225.67. Program pages will be available at the PHHA website.
