James Roach, 61, dies

Columbus, OH — James Ross Roach, 61, of Lewisburg, Ohio, died Feb. 12, 2023, at his home.

He was born May 24, 1961, in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Marion T. Roach and Shirley A. (Inloe) Roach.

Coming from a family that dabbled in harness racing, he spent his early years in the barn with his father and brothers, fueling his lifelong love for the sport.

While working for RJ Brown, he met the love of his life, Lorna. They were married in 1990 and had their daughter April in 1993. Spending 33 years of marriage together they went to car shows, flea markets, and auctions; enjoyed horseback riding; and shared many more memories.

In his early years, Mr. Roach also worked at a fertilizer plant and Route 35 Auto Sales.

He trained and occasionally drove horses for 44 years, mainly at Ohio and Indiana raceways and fairs. He passed on his love of the horses to his daughter with the family spending many days and nights together at the barn and races.

He enjoyed collecting antiques, going to auctions and relaxing with his prized possession, Molly, that shared his pillow every night.

Mr. Roach was loved by many and could always lighten the mood with his humor. He seemed to always know every person wherever he went. He was always there when needed and will be immensely missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Lorna; daughter, April (Aaron); brothers, Johnny and Bobby (Annmarie); sisters, Susan Chapin, Judy (Steve) McRill, and Jayne (Dave) Strine; nephews and nieces, Brian (Kerri), Stephanie (Scott), Artie (Michelle), Erin (Gregg), Annie (Rick), Josh (Lori), and Kevin; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews; beloved beagle, Molly; and his ex-race mare Rock Sensation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Scott Chapin.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday (Feb. 24) from 6-8 p.m. at Barnes Funeral Homes, 220 East Main Street, Eaton, Ohio.

Condolences may be sent to the family via the website at www.barnesfuneralhome.com.
