Rittman, OH – Jimmy Tipton, a devoted family man, passionate horseman, and Air Force Veteran, peacefully passed away at his home on July 12, 2023.

Born to James “J.C.” and Lola (Smith) Tipton in Taylorsville, Kentucky, Jim’s journey in life was marked by dedication and service. After relocating to his second hometown of Ellet and graduating from Ellet High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, working as a skilled mechanic on B-1 bombers. Jim’s commitment to his duty earned him an honorable discharge, leaving a lasting impression on those who served alongside him.

Professionally, Jim dedicated several years of his career to the former Akromodel Company in Akron, where he excelled as a tire pattern maker manager. Known as “Chief” to his colleagues, Jim’s shop-wide skills and expertise were top notch. He retired from the company, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Jim had a deep love for horses. As a passionate horseman, he owned numerous harness racehorses over the years, celebrating many victories. “Lookin For Speed” and “Only The Brave,” were just a couple that held a special place in his heart. Jim’s ties to his home state of Kentucky remained strong, and he cherished attending family reunions in Hazard at his grandparents’ house (Matt & Canzalia Smith) on 16 Mile Road.

An outdoorsman at heart, Jim found solace in hunting and fishing, as he always appreciated the serenity and beauty of nature. Additionally, Jim possessed a quietly competitive spirit and enjoyed playing euchre. He would eagerly participate in tournaments and family gatherings, sharing laughter, camaraderie, and many disagreements were solved by whoever could holler the loudest.

Surviving are his son, Perry (Cindee) Tipton of Prescott, AZ; daughter, Amy Burchett of Rittman; brother, Phil (Trish) Tipton of North Canton; sisters, Gail Nida of Mansfield and Carol Tipton Brown of Greenbrier, AR; sister-in-law Suzanne Tipton (Mo) and former wife and mother of his children, Marilyn Tipton of Dewey, AZ. Jim is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Morris “Mo” Tipton and Robert “Bobby” Tipton (Samantha); his wife, Katherine Tipton; and stepson Jason Ahlers.

Per Jim’s wishes, a service with military honors will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio on Thursday, July 20th @ 10:45 AM. Please arrive between 10:30AM and 10:45AM. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
