Columbus, OH — The June edition of Hoof Beats takes readers to Pinehurst, N.C., a winter hotbed of Standardbred training for over a century.
In “Haven,” Greg Lee — son of trainer Maxie Lee — recounts growing up in Pinehurst amid the turbulence of the mid-20th century, and how harness racing’s presence in the village launched careers in the industry for many Black horsepeople. Fast forwarding to the present day, regular Hoof Beats contributor Tim Bojarski looks at Pinehurst resident Marty McKenzie’s efforts to preserve the legacy of the village’s one-mile training track for decades to come in “Going the Extra Mile.”
Also in the June Hoof Beats are a conversation with Hall of Fame driver John Campbell about his six Hambletonian wins, a profile of Midwestern broodmare Lindy’s On Fire, and a glimpse back in time at the 1989 Little Brown Jug.
